Saudi Arabia Establishes New Authority to Oversee Islam’s Two Holiest Mosques

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has established a novel governing council to oversee the operations of the holiest sites in Islam – the Grand Holy Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s (PBUH) Holy Mosque in Madinah.

As per the announcement from the Saudi Cabinet, King Salman will oversee the newly established Presidency of Religious Affairs. This entity will be entrusted with the management of religious affairs within these revered mosques, including activities such as sermons, religious teachings, and calls to prayer.

The current General Presidency for the Affairs of both the Holy Mosques will undergo a transformation into the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque. This revised authority will be responsible for tasks including maintenance, services, and development.
