The Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Ploshah Khan, held a meeting to discuss issues related to internet and social media.
During the meeting, committee members expressed concerns about internet connectivity. While download speeds were generally acceptable, some applications were not working properly, and one member pointed out that voice notes were not being sent.
In response, the Chairman of PTA explained that Pakistan currently has 7 submarine cables and is working on adding more. He mentioned that 4 to 5 additional cables would be arriving soon, with 2 set to be installed by the end of the year. Despite these improvements, Pakistan is ranked 97th in the world for internet speed.
The Chairman also reassured the committee that sharks cannot damage the submarine cables. Additionally, the committee was informed that PTA receives 500 daily complaints related to social media content.
