National Assembly Committee Rejects Bill to Ban Dowry Practice

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior has rejected a bill proposing a ban on dowry after deliberations in a meeting chaired by Khurram Nawaz. The legislation, presented by MNA Sharmila Faruqui, sought to declare dowry illegal, introduce penalties for violations, and allow parents to give voluntary gifts, but the committee unanimously termed the bill impractical and unworkable. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had earlier issued a landmark ruling affirming that a bride retains full and unconditional ownership of her dowry and wedding gifts even after divorce, with Justice Mansoor Ali Shah stating that neither the husband nor his relatives have any legal claim over these items.
