Sindh considers launching ‘People’s Electricity Company’ to rival KE

Sindh’s power crisis has pushed the provincial government to bring in a competitor to Karachi’s only electricity provider, K-Electric (KE).

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), announced plans for the Sindh People’s Electricity Company to break KE’s monopoly and create a free market. Speaking at the Sindh High Court Bar Association, he emphasized the need for reliable power supply through a public-private partnership.

This move follows a dispute between KE and the Sindh government over unpaid taxes, which has worsened the energy crisis, leading to the closure of 81 industries in Karachi in the last five years.
