Punjab restores lifetime pension scheme for widows

The Punjab government has restored lifetime pensions for widows of deceased government employees, reversing the earlier 10-year limit. As per the Finance Department’s notification, approved by the Governor, pensions will now be shared fairly among widows in cases of multiple marriages. However, the benefit will end if a widow remarries. Officials termed this a historic step to protect women’s financial rights, benefiting thousands of families across the province. The reform is part of broader pension changes aligned with IMF requirements, ending multiple pensions for employees and limiting annual increments to the primary pension. The pension system has also been fully digitized, covering over 300,000 employees, with future pensions calculated based on the last 24 months of service.
