Pakistan’s Unemployment Rises from 4.5m to 5.9m in 2025

Pakistan is witnessing a sharp surge in unemployment, rising by 31% in recent years as jobless citizens increased from 4.5 million in 2020–21 to 5.9 million in 2024–25. This alarming jump of 1.4 million unemployed people highlights growing challenges across all age groups, with youth aged 15 to 24 hit the hardest as their unemployment rate climbed from 11.1% to 12.6%. Officials, including Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, warn that the country urgently needs job creation programs, improved skill training, and stronger labour policies to prevent further economic strain. Experts stress that boosting technical education, supporting small businesses, promoting entrepreneurship, and attracting investment are essential for long-term solutions as Pakistan’s job market becomes increasingly competitive.
