Over 144 killed as earthquakes strike Myanmar and Bangkok

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar on Friday, killing at least 144 people and injuring over 700, according to state media. The quake, centered northwest of Sagaing, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, causing widespread destruction.

Myanmar’s military government declared a state of emergency in six regions and made a rare appeal for international aid. Hospitals, roads, and bridges suffered severe damage, with medical facilities in Naypyidaw struggling to handle the rising casualties.

In neighboring Thailand, three people lost their lives, and at least 81 workers were trapped after a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok collapsed. Authorities have launched urgent rescue operations and declared an emergency zone in the capital. The tremors were felt across China, India, Cambodia, and Bangladesh, adding to the regional impact of the disaster.
