Nepra Fines K-Electric Rs25 Million for 2023 Power Outage

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed a Rs25 million fine on K-Electric for failing to restore power after the nationwide blackout in January 2023. NEPRA stated that K-Electric neglected its operational duties and did not conduct proper mock tests of its “black start” facility, crucial for restarting power after a total shutdown. The company has been ordered to pay the fine within 15 days. In response, K-Electric expressed surprise, claiming the outage originated from the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) system, not its own network, and said it is reviewing NEPRA’s decision before taking further action.
