At least 16 Pakistanis confirmed dead in Libya boat tragedy

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed on Tuesday that 16 Pakistani migrants died when their boat capsized off the coast of Libya, with 10 others still missing. A team from the Pakistani Embassy in Tripoli visited Zawiya, where it was reported that 63 Pakistanis were aboard the vessel. Authorities recovered 16 bodies, identified through passports, while 37 survivors are either in police custody or receiving medical care. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Foreign Office to provide updates and take strong action against human traffickers. This incident follows similar tragedies in recent months, including one in January near Mauritania, where over 40 Pakistanis drowned, and another in December off Greece, which claimed over 80 lives. In response to increasing illegal migration, the government has dismissed 35 FIA officials and replaced the director general for slow investigations. Religious scholars from Lahore’s Jamia Naeemia have also issued a fatwa declaring illegal migration unlawful and against Islamic teachings.
