Anchorperson Imran Riaz Handed Over to Police in Fraud Case

A Lahore district court on Wednesday granted anchorperson Imran Riaz, who was arrested last night in a fraud case, one day of police custody.

Riaz was apprehended at Allama Iqbal International Airport late Tuesday as he was preparing to depart for Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Viral social media footage depicted the journalist in ihram at the time of his arrest.

Subsequently, Nishtar Town police presented Riaz before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Kamran Zafar. According to the filed First Information Report (FIR), accessible on, Riaz faces accusations of abuse of trust under Section 406 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

During today’s hearing, police requested a seven-day physical remand for Riaz. The prosecutor alleged that the anchorperson had borrowed Rs0.25 billion from the complainant but failed to repay the amount. Meanwhile, Riaz’s lawyer, Mian Ashfaq, countered, labeling the case against his client as fabricated. He argued, “The complainant was an agent at Maryam Nawaz’s polling station.”

After hearing both arguments, the judge reserved the verdict and subsequently granted police a one-day physical remand of Riaz.

In LHC petitions, Riaz’s lawyer Azhar Siddique filed a plea seeking details of the FIR under which the anchorperson was arrested. The petition, available on, highlighted that Riaz was arrested without explanation as he prepared to depart for Hajj from Lahore on June 11.

The plea urged the court to summon respondents and obtain information on the FIRs used for Riaz’s arrest. It noted Riaz’s removal from the Exit Control List on June 11.

Separately, Riaz’s brother filed another petition in LHC, demanding his immediate release from “illegal and improper custody” and his production in court. This case is set for hearing before Justice Amjad Rafique.
