After spending almost a month in Adiala Jail, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Vice Chairman of the PTI, has announced his plan to meet with party chief Imran Khan on Wednesday. Qureshi aims to share his analysis of the current political situation in the country with Khan.
Qureshi was arrested last month by Islamabad police on various charges, including incitement of violent protests, following Imran Khan’s arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9.
Although the Islamabad High Court ordered Qureshi’s release on May 18, his release was delayed due to his reluctance to provide an undertaking to refrain from engaging in disruptive protests. Eventually, he was released on May 23 but was immediately taken into custody by Punjab police outside Adiala Jail based on detention orders issued by the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner.
Earlier today, the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench ordered Qureshi’s immediate release and overturned his detention orders. Qureshi expressed gratitude to God, his family, the PTI, the courts, and his legal team for their efforts in securing his release.
Qureshi emphasized the need to release countless innocent individuals held in different jails and vowed to pursue their cases in consultation with the legal team.
In conclusion, Qureshi mentioned his upcoming meeting with Imran Khan and promised to hold a press conference afterward. He declined to answer any further questions.
The Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench, in a separate hearing, set aside Qureshi’s detention orders and instructed the police not to arrest him in any other cases related to the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). The court ordered Qureshi’s immediate release and prohibited the collection of an affidavit from him.
Furthermore, the Punjab police submitted details of nine cases registered against Qureshi in Punjab, with five cases in Multan and the remaining in Lahore. The cases included charges related to vandalism at Jinnah House and other locations, with sections of terrorism involved. The petition regarding undisclosed cases against Qureshi was subsequently disposed of after the police report was presented in court.
