Weight-Loss Medicine Linked to Risk of Blindness, Study Finds

A Harvard study published in JAMA Ophthalmology has found that weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may raise the risk of a serious eye condition leading to blindness. The research revealed that people with diabetes who were prescribed semaglutide had a higher chance of developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked. The condition affects about 10 in 100,000 people. The study analyzed six years of data from 16,827 patients at Mass Eye and Ear, identifying a possible link between the drug and NAION.
