Three Killed in Kolkata Protests Against Waqf Amendment Law

Tensions erupted in Kolkata on Monday as protests against a controversial land law turned violent, with demonstrators torching police vehicles and blocking major roads. The unrest follows deadly clashes over the weekend in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, where three people were killed amid violent demonstrations. Protesters, largely from the Muslim community, expressed outrage over the new federal law, which critics say targets land traditionally reserved for Muslim use. Violence in Murshidabad included attacks on shopping malls and homes, prompting a suspension of internet services. In Kolkata’s Bhangar area, clashes broke out as police tried to disperse a rally, further fueling anger against what many see as discriminatory policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
