Taliban Sold U.S. Weapons to Militants: Report

A large stockpile of American military weapons and equipment left behind in Afghanistan after the 2021 US withdrawal has reportedly gone missing, been sold, or smuggled to militant groups, BBC sources revealed. Nearly one million US-funded weapons, including M4 and M16 rifles, Humvees, MRAPs, and Black Hawk helicopters, were taken over by the Taliban. By late 2024, a UN Security Council meeting in Doha confirmed that around 500,000 of these items are now unaccounted for. A UN report in February 2025 stated that some of the missing weapons have reached groups linked to al-Qaeda, such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, East Turkestan Islamic Movement, and Yemen’s Ansarullah. Taliban officials deny the claims, insisting all weapons are safely stored
