Sindh Assembly declares ex-PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto a ‘National Democratic Hero’

The recent passage of a resolution by the Sindh Assembly has marked a significant moment in Pakistan’s political sphere by declaring Zulfikar Ali Bhutto a “National Democratic Hero.” This move, championed by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, signifies a crucial step towards rectifying the injustices surrounding Bhutto’s trial, sentencing, and execution, echoing the sentiments of justice delayed but not forgotten.

At the core of this resolution lies the pivotal opinion of the Supreme Court, shedding light on the miscarriage of justice endured by Bhutto. The acknowledgment of Bhutto’s denied fair trial resonates deeply, emphasizing the constitutional imperative of justice for all citizens. By honoring the sacrifices of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the resolution pays tribute to the resilience and fortitude of the Bhutto family in their pursuit of justice and democracy.

The unanimous approval of the resolution by the Sindh Assembly underscores a collective commitment to recognizing Bhutto’s contributions to Pakistan’s democratic foundation. Furthermore, the call for amendments to prevent similar injustices in the future reflects a forward-thinking approach to safeguarding the principles of justice and the rule of law.

The Supreme Court’s opinion, issued in response to a 2011 presidential reference, serves as a beacon of hope for those advocating for accountability and transparency in governance. By praising the ruling as a positive and historic development, the court reaffirms its role as a guardian of constitutional rights and principles.

By commemorating Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as a “National Democratic Hero” and officially recognizing him as a “Shaheed,” the Sindh Assembly not only honors his memory but also reaffirms its dedication to upholding the values of democracy, justice, and equality for all Pakistani citizens. This resolution stands as a testament to Bhutto’s enduring legacy and the ongoing struggle for a more just and equitable society.
