PPP Senator Sherry Rehman on Monday urged against politicising the deadly Gul Plaza fire in Karachi, calling the tragic incident a “lesson for all of us.” Speaking in the Senate after MQM Senator Khalida Ateeb criticised the Sindh government over alleged negligence, Rehman described the incident as heartbreaking and said no compensation could make up for the loss of lives. She stated that the Sindh government remained fully active in handling the situation, though she acknowledged that the fire brigade faced delays in reaching the site due to heavy crowds. Rehman added that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had announced Rs10 million in compensation for the affected families and stressed that while shutting down private businesses would be harmful, strict fire safety measures are essential for a city like Karachi, adding that the Gul Plaza administration should also be questioned over the incident.
