Late Monday night, an unknown number of inmates escaped from District Prison Malir after breaking through a weakened outer wall damaged by recent tremors. Videos on social media showed heavy gunfire near the prison and inmates running along nearby roads. Police launched a search operation and have re-arrested more than a dozen escapees so far. The area around the prison is sealed off, with strict identity checks for entry and exit. Sindh Prisons Minister Ali Hasan Zardari has ordered an official report from top prison officials following the jailbreak.
