Pakistan’s Imports from India Increase 46% to $35.8 Million in October

Pakistan’s imports from India have risen for the fourth straight month under the current government. In October 2024, imports surged by 46% compared to October 2023, reaching $35.8 million, up from $24.5 million. This follows earlier increases of 45% in September and 5% in August.

Trade between the two nations had been largely suspended since August 2019, when India revoked Kashmir’s special status. However, Pakistan eased restrictions to allow the import of life-saving medicines despite ongoing tensions.

This increase in trade coincides with heightened political friction. Recently, India refused to send its cricket team to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, citing security concerns despite Pakistan’s assurances.

The steady growth in imports highlights a cautious reopening of economic ties, focusing on essential goods like medicines. While overall trade remains limited, the consistent rise suggests a gradual shift in cross-border trade policies.

Despite this economic engagement, political and diplomatic relations remain strained, with unresolved issues in sports and other areas continuing to challenge ties between the two countries.
