Pakistan Railways plans to switch its entire power network to solar energy

Pakistan Railways is set to convert its entire power network, including significant railway stations, offices, workshops, and factories, to solar systems in multiple phases. This initiative is anticipated to result in substantial savings, with an estimated Rs. 1.8 billion saved in the first phase alone. In the initial stage, about 99 formations, including major railway stations and divisional headquarters, will transition to solar power, with the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) providing the necessary expertise. The decision aims to relieve financial pressure on Pakistan Railways and promote sustainability. Additionally, the department plans to install fiber optics cables along the entire railway tracks to generate additional revenue and enhance connectivity across the country. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) discussed and approved these plans in a recent meeting.
