NASA gets a signal from space, 10 million miles away

NASA has reached a notable milestone in the advancement of its Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment, successfully receiving a signal from a spacecraft situated 10 million miles away through the utilization of a remote laser.

The DSOC experiment is dedicated to assessing the feasibility of optical communications via lasers, with the objective of enhancing data rates by up to 100 times in comparison to conventional radio signals.

This groundbreaking achievement occurred during a test conducted on NASA’s Psyche mission, currently on its way to explore a distant asteroid.

The adoption of laser technology in communication holds the potential to significantly augment capabilities for future space missions, including endeavors involving human exploration of Mars.
