Karachi Set to Become Fifth Largest City Globally by 2050: UN

Karachi is set to become the world’s fifth-largest city by 2050, with its population expected to reach nearly 33 million, surpassing major cities like Cairo, Tokyo, Guangzhou, Manila, and Kolkata, according to the UN’s World Urbanisation Prospects 2025. The report highlights Karachi’s rapid urban growth, which has contributed to its ranking among the “10 least liveable cities” due to extreme population density of around 25,000 people per square kilometre. As Pakistan’s main economic hub, the city attracts residents seeking jobs, education, and healthcare, but this growth is placing increasing pressure on housing, transport, infrastructure, and public services. The UN study also reflects broader trends in Asia, where urban populations are expanding rapidly, and global megacities are expected to rise to 37 by 2050.
