The death toll from the devastating Gul Plaza fire on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi rose to at least 23 on Monday, while 65 people were still reported missing, according to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. The fire broke out late Saturday night in the ground-plus-three-storey commercial building, which housed around 1,200 shops across 8,000 square yards, and partially collapsed due to the intense blaze. Although authorities claimed the fire was brought under control after more than 24 hours on Sunday, firefighting operations resumed on Monday after flames reignited from smouldering debris. Karachi South DIG Syed Asad Raza confirmed that 23 bodies had been recovered from the rubble, adding that remains of some victims were found in parts.
