Government plans to reduce electricity prices by Rs. 6-8 per unit within two months

The federal government plans to cut electricity prices by Rs6-8 per unit within the next two months to provide relief to consumers, especially middle- and lower-income households. This move aims to ease financial pressure and address public concerns over high tariffs. Meanwhile, opposition parties continue to criticize energy sector policies and agreements with independent power producers (IPPs). Federal Secretary Energy, Dr. Muhammad Fakhr-e-Alam Irfan, stated that tax reductions on electricity bills are in progress, awaiting IMF approval in early March. Officials also revealed that renegotiations with IPPs have saved Rs700 billion, including Rs300 billion in interest payments. Additionally, a task force is optimizing state-owned power plants to cut costs further.
