Election Commission of Pakistan will announce the voting timetable next week

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is gearing up to announce the schedule for the February 8 polls next week. Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja mentioned that the printing and delivery of final electoral rolls have been successfully completed. The schedule is expected to be unveiled on December 14, and district returning officers (DROs), returning officers (ROs), and assistant returning officers (AROs) will be appointed.

Judicial officers from high courts were initially considered for these roles, but as they were not available, officers from the district administration will now be appointed. Chief Election Commissioner Raja emphasized the ECP’s readiness, commitment, and assurance of security for voters during the election process. He urged the public to participate in shaping the nation’s future by exercising their right to vote and cautioned against believing in unfounded news and rumors.

National Voters Day, observed on December 7, aims to create awareness about vote registration and encourage the electorate to use their voting power. The CEC assured a peaceful election and sought people’s cooperation. Notably, the involvement of judicial officers in election duties has been a topic of debate, with concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

The National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) decided in 2009 to stop judicial officers from performing election duties, but exceptions were made in certain instances. The ECP is currently preparing for the elections scheduled for February 8, focusing on ensuring a transparent and secure voting process.
