Amnesty International Urges Authorities to Ensure Uninterrupted Internet Access On 8th Feb

Amnesty International has issued an open letter, urging authorities to ensure continuous access to the internet and digital communication platforms for all individuals across Pakistan during the electoral process.

“We, the signatories of this letter and members of the #KeepItOn coalition — a global network comprising over 300 organizations from 105 countries committed to ending internet shutdowns — call upon you, Prime Minister Mr. Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, to publicly pledge to guarantee that the citizens of Pakistan enjoy unrestricted access to the internet, social media platforms, and all other communication channels throughout the forthcoming general election on February 8, 2024,” it stated.

Highlighting the importance of ensuring citizens’ access to information and avenues for freedom of expression, assembly, and association, both online and offline, the letter emphasized the necessity for authorities to prioritize human rights as Pakistan prepares for the voting process.

“Such measures will also contribute to fostering an inclusive, free, and fair election environment,” the organization asserted.
