Zahir Jaffer to Stay on Death Row as Supreme Court Upholds Sentence

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence of Zahir Jaffer in the high-profile Noor Mukadam murder case, rejecting his appeal. Noor Mukadam, 27, was brutally tortured and beheaded at Jaffer’s Islamabad residence in July 2021. Jaffer was arrested immediately, and in February 2022, he was sentenced to death along with 25 years of rigorous imprisonment by a district court. A three-judge Supreme Court bench confirmed the sentence and also reduced the jail terms of Jaffer’s guard and gardener from ten to four years, ordering their immediate release as they have served the reduced time. During the appeal, Jaffer’s lawyer challenged the prosecution’s reliance on CCTV evidence, highlighting technical issues with video playback, but the court maintained its decision, emphasizing the strength of the overall case.
