World Bank: 44.7% of Pakistanis Now Living Below Poverty Line

The World Bank has updated global poverty lines based on new data and changes in global price levels, revealing alarming figures for Pakistan. With the revised lower-middle-income poverty line now set at $4.20 per person per day, around 44.7% of Pakistan’s population is living in poverty. Extreme poverty has also surged, with 16.5% of people earning less than $3.00 a day—up from 4.9% under the previous $2.15 standard. The update, using 2021 purchasing power parity (PPP) data, also shows that 88.4% of Pakistanis fall below the $8.30 upper-middle-income poverty line. These changes aim to keep global poverty estimates accurate and consistent.
