Who is the custodian of the key to the Holy Kaaba?

Despite the fact that the Saudi government is responsible for managing Masjid al-Haram and the Holy Kaaba, the keys to the Kaaba are held by the Al-Shaiba tribe. This tribe has been the designated key-keeper of the Kaaba for over a thousand years, and the role of the key-keeper is considered to be of great importance and privilege in the Islamic world.

For over 16 centuries before the spread of Islam throughout the world, the grandsons of Qusai bin Kilab bin Murrah were responsible for the care and maintenance of the Kaaba, including holding onto its keys. This tradition was passed down through the generations and continued even after the emergence of Islam. The Al-Shaiba tribe, as the descendants of Qusai bin Kilab bin Murrah, has held the responsibility of key-keeping for the Kaaba for over a thousand years, and this role is still considered to be of great significance in the Islamic world.
