Waqar Younis to be appointed as Pakistan’s Director of Cricket

Waqar Younis is poised to rejoin Pakistan cricket, this time in a pivotal role as the board’s cricketing head.

On Monday, Waqar met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore to finalize the appointment, though some issues remain unresolved. One such issue might involve the specifics of the role. Initially, Waqar will serve as a consultant and advisor to the chairman on cricket affairs. However, if the appointment becomes permanent, the role is expected to evolve into something akin to the position currently held by Robert Key, Managing Director at the ECB.

A board official mentioned that Naqvi is eager to appoint a former cricketer to oversee “all cricketing matters, such as selection, high performance, and pathways,” allowing the chairman to focus on board administration. Naqvi’s time is particularly stretched as he also holds the position of Pakistan’s Interior Minister, a key role in the cabinet. Previously, Faisal Hasnain served as CEO under Ramiz Raja, but following Raja’s departure and the reversion to the old constitution, the CEO role was abolished.
