The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that the ash cloud from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption will not affect coastal areas of Pakistan, including Karachi. The volcano, located in Ethiopia’s Afar region near the Eritrean border, erupted on Sunday for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending ash up to 14 km into the sky. PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazeer Zaighum said the ash cloud will pass over the Arabian Sea, affecting regions like Oman and the Mumbai flight area, but will not impact Karachi. The cloud, observed 60 nautical miles south of Gwadar, is at an altitude of around 50,000 feet, and warnings have been issued to relevant authorities.
