Pakistan’s internet speed is set to improve with a new cable

A new undersea internet cable, part of the 2Africa Submarine Cable System, is being installed to boost internet speed and reliability in Pakistan.

Stretching 45,000 kilometers and backed by Meta and Vodafone, this cable will connect 46 locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, with a massive capacity of 180 Tbps.

In Pakistan, the project is overseen by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Transworld Associates (TWA) and is expected to be fully operational by Q4 2025.

Work on the cable began on December 1, 2024, with the Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation successfully completed at Hawksbay, Karachi.

The deep-sea cable laying phase will start in April 2025. Once activated, the cable will deliver 24 terabytes of bandwidth, nearly tripling Pakistan’s existing internet capacity, which is currently limited to 8 terabytes from seven undersea cables.
