The National Assembly recently approved two significant bills to expand the Supreme Court of Pakistan, increasing the number of judges from 17 to 34 and introducing amendments to the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Ordinance. The decision, presented by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, faced intense resistance from opposition members, who protested loudly throughout the session.
In a dramatic scene, the ministers donned headphones to stay focused despite the commotion. Meanwhile, opposition members showed their dissent by gathering at the speaker’s dais, shouting objections, and even tearing copies of the bills in protest.
The session’s agenda also included discussions on Pakistan’s ranking in the Rule of Law Index, a motion to formally acknowledge the President’s recent address, and concerns regarding Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) planes currently grounded due to operational issues.
