In a departure from a 60-year tradition, the Indian tennis squad has arrived in Pakistan for the Davis Cup Group I tie, overcoming months of uncertainty and initial hesitance. The tie is scheduled to take place at the Sports Complex Grass Court in Islamabad on February 3-4.
This moment signifies a significant occasion as India and Pakistan clash on the tennis court after a prolonged hiatus. India leads the head-to-head record at 7-0, with only two matches held at neutral venues in 1973 and 2019. The Indian team’s previous visit to Pakistan dates back to 1964.
Despite the All-Indian Tennis Association’s (AITA) endeavors to alter the hosting rights by appealing to the Davis Cup Committee and the Chair of the Independent Tribunal, their efforts proved unsuccessful. Faced with the decision of either competing in Pakistan or risking penalties and potential relegation, the Indian team chose to journey for the tie.
