Council of Islamic Ideology Opposes Ban on Under-18 Marriages

The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has rejected the bill passed by the National Assembly and Senate to ban marriages under the age of 18, stating dissatisfaction with the fixed age limit. During a meeting led by Dr. Raghib Hussain Naeemi, members discussed the issue of puberty and questioned the suitability of 18 as the legal age for marriage. While recognizing the need to address social and moral concerns, the council emphasized that marriage should be reviewed through religious, cultural, and societal perspectives. It concluded that setting a strict legal age and penalizing underage marriages goes against Islamic teachings.
