Bangladesh Removes Sheikh Mujib from Currency Notes

Bangladesh has started issuing new banknotes that no longer feature the portrait of its founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This change comes as former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, his daughter, faces trial in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity after being ousted in August 2024 during a student-led uprising. The caretaker government, now managing the country of 170 million people, introduced redesigned currency highlighting natural landscapes, cultural landmarks, and historical artwork instead of human figures. The new notes include images of Hindu and Buddhist temples, historic sites, and national symbols reflecting Bangladesh’s diverse heritage.
