Cigarettes Worth Rs 25 Crore Reportedly Stolen From Federal Board of Revenue Warehouse

The Senate Standing Committee on Interior, chaired by Saifullah Abro, has taken notice of the alleged theft of 2,828 cartons of confiscated cigarettes worth around Rs250 million from warehouses of the Federal Board of Revenue. During the meeting, officials were questioned about how such a large quantity of seized goods disappeared from government custody. The cigarettes were seized in Swabi in January 2024 and later shifted to warehouses that reportedly lacked proper security, including CCTV cameras. The shortage was discovered in May 2025, after which an FIR was registered and the Federal Investigation Agency was assigned to investigate the case. Following initial findings, three FBR officers were dismissed and eight others were transferred, while new SOPs were introduced to improve warehouse security. However, another reported theft in January 2026 has raised fresh concerns about accountability, oversight, and internal control within the department.
