Pakistan to Become World’s 3rd Most Populous Country by 2050: UN

Pakistan’s fertility rate has dropped from six births per woman in 1994 to 3.6 in 2024, according to the United Nations World Fertility Report. Despite this decline, Pakistan is projected to become the third most populous country by 2050, surpassing the U.S., Indonesia, Brazil, and Russia. Since gaining independence in 1947 with a population of 31 million, Pakistan’s population has grown to 241 million, as reported by the 2023 census. To address this rapid growth, the government has launched family planning initiatives, contraceptive distribution, and educational campaigns, particularly in rural areas. Collaboration with international partners, like the UN Population Fund, supports these efforts. However, cultural and religious barriers, along with gender inequality and limited education access, continue to challenge progress.
