Pakistan Railways Reports 537 Accidents in Past 5 Years

Between 2020 and 2025, Pakistan Railways recorded 537 train accidents, with unsafe level crossings being the leading cause. Of these, 313 incidents resulted in deaths or serious injuries, highlighting major safety concerns across the railway network. Operating around 40,750 train trips annually, the department averages 107 accidents per year, with 2020 marking the worst year with 84 accidents. Many railway crossings lack gates, warning systems, or trained staff, making them hazardous for both pedestrians and vehicles. Experts cite poor infrastructure, outdated systems, and limited investment as key issues. There is growing public demand for urgent reforms, including automated barriers, staff training, and awareness campaigns to improve railway safety in Pakistan.
