Bangladesh Cancels $21M Indian Defense Deal Amid Rising Tensions

The Government of Bangladesh has terminated a $21 million contract with India’s state-owned Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) for the construction of a modern ocean-going tug, as reported by The Hindu. Originally awarded in July 2024, the contract cancellation was confirmed by GRSE through a regulatory filing to India’s National Stock Exchange and BSE under securities disclosure rules. The move comes at a time of growing diplomatic strain between the two nations, following India’s recent withdrawal of a key transshipment facility that allowed Bangladesh to export goods to third countries.
