Pakistan’s democracy ranking dropped six places in 2024, placing it among the world’s 10 worst-performing countries, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) latest Democracy Index. The report evaluates 165 states and two territories based on electoral process, government function, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. Pakistan ranked 124th with a score of 2.84, categorizing it under authoritarian rule. The global decline in democracy is linked to increasing repression in authoritarian regimes, highlighting concerns about shrinking political freedoms worldwide.
