New York City Cancels $220M Deal for PIA’s Roosevelt Hotel

New York City has canceled its $220 million lease with the Roosevelt Hotel, owned by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), following criticism over the use of public funds for asylum seekers. The historic hotel, which closed in 2020 due to financial losses, was reopened in 2023 to house migrants from Texas. However, concerns over high taxpayer costs led to the lease’s termination. Mayor Eric Adams stated that the city’s revised policies have helped cut expenses and better allocate resources, making the decision part of a broader effort to improve financial efficiency.
